Field Notes

African Grey Parrot Lifespan, Size, and Care

African Grey Parrots are native to the rainforests of West and Central Africa and have long been admired for their intelligence and vocal ability. The two commonly recognized types are the Congo African Grey and the Timneh African Grey, both of which have been kept as companion birds for decades.

These parrots are sensitive, observant, and deeply social, often forming close attachments to one or two people. They can be affectionate and loyal, but they may also be cautious, prone to stress, and sometimes develop fearfulness or feather-destructive behaviors if their environment is unstable.

African Greys need a spacious cage, a balanced diet based on high-quality pellets with fresh vegetables and limited fruit, and regular veterinary care from an avian veterinarian. They do best in homes with predictable routines, plenty of safe chew toys, foraging opportunities, and daily social interaction to prevent boredom.

Exercise needs are high because African Greys require both physical activity and intense mental engagement. Daily out-of-cage time, climbing, wing-flapping, supervised exploration, puzzle toys, and training sessions are all important to keep them physically fit and emotionally healthy.

African Grey Parrot Feeding Guide

Use this African Grey Parrot feeding guide as a starting point for common life stages, then adjust for body condition, activity, and veterinary advice.

Formative years

Young

01

Young parrots should follow a species-appropriate weaning plan guided by an avian veterinarian or an experienced breeder, because nutritional mistakes early in life can cause long-term problems. Hand-feeding changes, pellet introduction, and fresh-food variety should all be handled gradually.

Peak years

Adult

02

Adult parrots usually need a balanced foundation of high-quality formulated food plus species-appropriate vegetables, greens, and controlled treats, but the ideal ratio differs across species. Seed-heavy diets and free-feeding calorie-dense foods can quickly lead to obesity, liver disease, and vitamin imbalance.

Mature years

Senior

03

Senior parrots often need closer monitoring of weight, droppings, hydration, and diet tolerance as liver, kidney, or mobility problems emerge with age. An avian veterinarian should review any appetite change quickly, because birds can decline fast once eating behavior changes.

Feeding amounts are reference points, not prescriptions. Recheck portions whenever age, activity, weight, stool quality, or medical needs change.
